Causes of Acne

Common acne is known as ‘Acne vulgaris’. It is classified as a chronic inflammatory disease of the skin. It is characterized by the presence of pimples or zits, blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules, nobules and cysts. It mainly affects the face, neck, chest, back, and upper arms of sufferers. Acne may be mild or severe. Although it most frequently effects teens and preteens, adult acne is also quite common.

The skin has pores which connect to oil glands located under the skin, via follicles. Sebum, an oily liquid, is produced by the oil glands. The sebum carries dead skin cells through the follicles to the surface of the skin. Acne develops when follicles get blocked and infected. Acne is not dangerous but it leaves scars. Home remedies for acne can be a great help in curing acne.

Causes of Acne

Hormone Fluctuations

Acne often appears during puberty, when there is a surge of androgen hormones within the body.  Androgens stimulate the sebaceous glands, creating an oilier complexion and one more prone to breakouts. Acne is also likely to develop in women during menstruation, pregnancy, menopause and per menopause when there are a lot of hormonal fluctuations.

Oily skin

Oily skin produces excess oil, which can easily become trapped within the pore, creating an impaction. Hence people whose skin is oilier than average, are more prone to acne.

Medications

Some medications such as steroids and estrogen medications and those which contain androgen or lithium may cause acne.

Cosmetics

Oily cosmetics, comedogenic skin care or hair care products may cause acne in some susceptible people.

Genetic Reasons

Acne tends to run in families. If your parents had acne at any point in their lives, your chance of developing acne is higher.

Symptoms Of Acne

There are two main types of acne: non-inflammatory and inflammatory.

Non-inflammatory acne is a mild type of acne. There are just a few whiteheads and blackheads on the face. The majority of people with acne have this type of acne.

In inflammatory acne, the whiteheads become inflamed and red pimples and pustules develop. In its most severe form, inflammatory acne can cause disfiguring cysts and deep, pitting scars of the face, neck, back, chest and groin.

Diet For Acne

For the treatment of acne the patient should take only an ‘all-fruit’ diet for a week, taking three meals a day, of fresh juicy fruits, such as apples, pears, grapes, grapefruit, pineapples, and peaches. Only unsweetened lemon or plain water, either hot or cold, should be drunk and nothing else.

After one-week the patient should begin taking a well-balanced diet with emphasis on raw foods, fresh fruit and vegetables, sprouted seeds, raw nuts, and wholegrain cereals, particularly millet and brown rice. The ‘all-fruit’ diet may be done at regular intervals till the skin’s condition improves. People suffering from medical conditions must take their physicians advice before making such major changes in their diet.

Meats, sugar, strong tea or coffee, condiments, pickles, soft drinks, candies, ice cream, refined and processed foods should be avoided as far as possible. For better results such diets should be used along with home remedies for acne.
