Insomnia is a term that refers to sleeplessness. It is a condition where a person is unable to sleep. Sleepless nights are a cause of worry and afflict the daily chores. Signs and symptoms of insomnia include waking up in the night, difficulty to fall asleep, inability to sleep in regular sleeping hours and inability to fall asleep when some disturbance wakes you in the middle of the night. In some people the condition is so severe that they must take sleeping pills every night to fall asleep. Smoking, excessive consumption of tea and coffee, overeating, constipation, bitterness, anger, suppressed resentment, stress, anxiety and tension are some of the causes of insomnia. However, there are some excellent natural remedies that can help your insomnia to a great extent.

Natural Remedies for Insomnia:

Yogurt:

Eating yogurt has been known as a good remedy for insomnia since ancient times. Try and eat one serving of yogurt for dinner so that it helps you get a good night’s sleep. Try and make it sugar less though, as high sugar levels tend to interfere with your BP causing a spike which can make falling asleep harder.


Milk:
A glass of warm milk just before you sleep often works for insomnia. Try not to add sugar and replace it with honey or cinnamon. Honey is a natural sedative while cinnamon warms your body increasing circulation thereby helping you sleep faster and for longer.

Onions:

Try to include raw onions in your daily diet. Raw onions when included in your diet in the form of salads can be a good remedy against insomnia. Onions are known to be rich in riboflavin which is usually found in onions.

Fenugreek:

Fenugreek is known to have anti anxiety and sedative properties which help insomnia patients relax and get more sleep. Add a tablespoon of honey to two tablespoons of fenugreek leaves and take it before sleeping. Try and follow it for a month for effective results


Celery leaves:

Celery is known to contain essential oils and flavonoids which have a calming and soothing effect on the nervous system. Mix 1 tablespoon each of honey and celery leaves and consume it prior to going to bed. Continue this remedy for a fortnight for its efficient action.

Honey:

Honey is a natural sedative that can help in curing insomnia. Eat a spoon of honey or mix it in warm milk or water and consume it. Make sure that you eat this just before you sleep for a good effect.

Banana:
Banana is a fruit that is known to cure insomnia. A cup of mashed banana mixed with cumin seeds can be consumed after dinner for a good nights sleep.

Nutmeg:

Nutmeg is known to be a good natural sedative. Mix the powder of nutmeg with ghee and eat the paste before you sleep to ward off insomnia.

Herbal teas:

Herbal teas like chamomile tea and peppermint tea are known to be beneficial for insomnia. A cup of herbal tea everyday in the evening can help treat insomnia and put you to sleep for a longer time.

Peanut Butter:

Peanut butter is a food that contains tryptophan, an amino acid that helps in the production of serotonin which puts you to sleep. A spoon or two of peanut butter before you sleep is a good treatment for insomnia.
